威廉·E·华莱士  华盛顿大学艺术史教授



威廉·E·华莱士1983年于纽约哥伦比亚大学获得艺术史博士学位,现任华盛顿大学艺术史及考古学系教授。华莱士讲授1300到1700间的文艺复兴艺术和建筑,是国际公认的研究米开朗基罗及其所在时代艺术家的权威。除了总数超过90篇论文,书本章节和文章(包括两部小说),他也是7部以米开朗基罗为专题的著作的作者兼编辑,其中包括:《米开朗基罗在圣洛伦佐:作为承包人的天才》(剑桥大学,1994);《米开朗基罗:英语研究文献》(加兰,1996);《米开朗基罗:雕塑、绘画和建筑全集》(休-劳特-莱文,1998)和《米开朗基罗:选读》(加兰,1999)。他的传记著作《米开朗基罗:艺术家、伟人及其生活的时代》在2010年呈交剑桥大学出版社,并于次年以平装本出版发行。其新作《发现米开朗基罗:艺术爱好者理解米开朗基罗名作指南》由里佐利国际出版公司于2012年出版。



1990-1991年,威廉·华莱士在哈佛大学文艺复兴研究中心工作;1996-1997年他在罗马的美国研究院,1999年春,他作为罗伯特斯特林克拉克访问学者前往马萨诸塞州的威廉斯敦,担任威廉姆学院的特聘教授。

 Profile



William E. Wallace received his Ph.D. inArt History from Columbia University in New York in 1983 and is currently Professor in the Department of Art History and Archaeology. He teaches Renaissance art and architecture 1300-1700, and is an internationally recognized authority on Michelangelo and his contemporaries. In addition tomore than 90 essays, chapters and articles (as well as two works of fiction),he is the author and editor of seven different books on Michelangelo, including Michelangelo at San Lorenzo: the Genius as Entrepreneur (Cambridge,1994); Michelangelo: SelectedScholarship in English (Garland, 1996), Michelangelo: The Complete Sculpture, Painting, and Architecture (Hugh Lauter Levin, 1998), and Michelangelo:Selected Readings (Garland,1999). His biography, Michelangelo:The Artist, the Man and his Times appeared with Cambridge University Press in 2010, and issued in paperback in 2011. Mostrecently, he has published Discovering Michelangelo: The Art Lover's Guide to Understanding Michelangelo's Masterpieces with RizzoliInternational Publications in 2012.

 

In 1990-91 he was a fellow at Villa I Tatti, Harvard University's Center for Renaissance Studies in Florence; in 1996-97 he was at the American Academy in Rome, and in Spring 1999 he was the Robert Sterling Clark Distinguished Visiting Professor at Williams College in Williamstown, MA.

In 1990, Wallace was among a select groupof scholars, curators and conservators from around the world invited to conferwith the Vatican about the restoration of Michelangelo’s frescos in the Sistine Chapel.

Professor Wallace was on sabbatical leave for the calendaryear of 2014, during which time he was a Senior Visiting Professorat Villa I Tatti in Florence. In April 2013, Professor Wallace was the HenryKing Stanford Distinguished Professor in the Humanities at the Universityof Miami.  He received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Champaign-Urbana (May 2013), and an Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts from Dickinson College (May 2015). 

Professor William Wallace’s biography, Michelangelo: The Artist,the Man, and His Times appeared with Cambridge University Press (2010). Inconjunction with its publication he has been lecturing extensively, includingat the Seattle Art Museum, the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., the Frick Collection in New York, the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, TX, the Aspen Institute in Colorado, and Harvard University. He also has beeninterviewed on NPR radio, KTRS radio of St. Louis, and by Rick Steves for the popular travel program. In addition he has published four book chapter essaysand five articles in journals such as Source, Arion, and Artibuse Historiae. His book, The Treasures of Michelangelo should appearwith Carlton Books UK in 2010. He was the recipient of the 2010 David Hadas  Teaching Award in Arts and Sciences for demonstrating his commitment andexcellence in teaching first year undergraduate students. Additionally,Professor Wallace was video-taped by a film crew in Arts & Sciences whileteaching his introductory lecture to his course on Michelangelo.

 “Michelangelo is the best-documented artist ofthe early modern era,” Wallace said. “Nearly 1,400 letters by and to himsurvive, along with 300 pages of his personal and professional records, and anextensive correspondence among members of his immediate family. Then there arerelated documents: contracts, business and bank records, a nearly completepicture of the artist’s finances and property holdings, and the innumerablenotices by his contemporaries.”
